THERE’S A SNAKE IN MY BOOT
March 2024 - April 2024, Bim Bam Gallery. Paris, France.
Bim Bam Gallery is happy to announce Lauren Januhowski’s solo show "There's a snake in my boot". The American artist based in Paris is presenting a series of figurative hand made textile works, mixing fabrics, embroidery and beading.
This exhibition has a lot of autobiographical elements, including many self portraits, to talk with poetry about both omens and anxieties. Showing multiple versions of herself, Lauren Januhowski uses her own dreams and memories to create a collective story, inspired by moments of her daily life, her intimacy and stories of other women. The collective and narrative aspect of her textile works is reflected by her own technique: reconstructing a shared reality, sometimes flirting with the fantastic, that is physically made by several pieces of fabric sewed together.
The expression “There’s a snake in my boot” is a reappropriation of the popular phrase, especially in the South of the US, talking about alcoholic hallucinations. For Lauren Januhowski it relates to the constant searching of signs and omens, whether it is in this reality or a parallel one.
“The title comes from a recent experience that I had, where a sewing needle had made its way into my cowgirl boots and I had to retrieve it from being embedded in my foot. I took this as an omen of my practice being a constant reminder of the present and bringing me back to my physical self. A corporal experience which is meditative, obsessive and often painful at the same time.”
